Tom the Furniture Guy

Old barnwood crafts have been around for many years.  Custom Barnwood Signs can be found here at the Franklin Farmers Market.  Personalized Barn wood signs made from barn wood are what Artisan Tom Podnar loves creating.  During the last five years terrible storms have moved through middle Tennessee leaving many of our beautiful barns in ruins. Saddened by what he saw, a Hickman County furniture maker was determined that their legacy wouldn’t be lost forever. Tom Podnar also known as Tom the Furniture Guy began salvaging the old rustic barnwood in his local area, turning that beautifully rustic old barn wood into furniture. He has built harvest tables, benches and trunks & has even created custom pieces like bed frames and wall units from the old barnwood.  Two years ago Tom started using the small leftover pieces from his furniture projects to make personalized barnwood signs. Since then he has made hundreds of hand - painted signs ranging from the humorous to the spiritual. “Everyone has an idea for a sign,” says Tom, “I love making a sign that is special for them.” Tom sells his barnwood signs at the Franklin Farmer’s Market and through his wife’s vintage store “April’s Attic” in Centerville.  His unique and whimsical barn wood signs have also been shipped to customers around the country. “I have a great time making barnwood signs for people,” Tom says, “and it is a wonderful way to let these beautiful barns live on for many more years.”
